Lights and Shadows
Welcome to Light and Shadow, our fourth unit in Science.
We will be learning all about how light operates. Did you know that light continues unless it is reflected, absorbed, or bent?
The Light and Shadow Show
Our class will be presenting our final project to other classes at the end of this unit. (Date to be announced shortly). The Light and Shadow Show will teach our audience about
- reflection
- photons
- colour
- optical illusions
- luminescent objects
- solar eclipses
- and much more!
Activity:
The Light Stuff
Light Pollution
Time Traveller: Einstein's Theory of Relativity
Plants in Motion
Light continues unless it is reflected, absorbed, or bent.
Video:
How Light Travels
Speed of Light
Solar Eclipse
Have you ever seen a solar eclipse?
Shadow Tricks
Check out these illusions using shadows.
Light and the Law of Reflection
Telescope Girl
Cooking Cookies with Solar Power
Observing Refraction of Light
Light and Colour
How can we see colour? I thought light was white.
The Light Waterfall
Can you bend light? I know I can.
Activities:
Chromatron 1
Here's a game where you use mirrors and lense to reflect a laser into colored targets. Move the proper mirror or lense into the path of the laser beam. That will cause the laser to reflect into a different direction. How many levels can you pass?

Solar Eclipse
Watch this video and answer the following questions in your own comment.
- What is happening to the Sun as seen from Earth during a solar eclipse? Describe it.
- Why can a solar eclipse happen only during a new Moon phase?
- What would a solar eclipse look like if the Moon were smaller than it is now?
- Using two balls of quite different sizes, see if you can demonstrate why the Moon and Sun appear to be the same size when viewed from Earth.
- Based on what you now know about a solar eclipse, try to explain what happens during a lunar eclipse. (Hint: They only can happen when there is a full Moon!)
Telescope Girls
Watch this Video and answer the following questions in your own comment.
- How does Katy's reflecting telescope work?
- What materials did Katy use to make her telescope?
- Have you ever looked through a telescope? If so, how easy was it to see the object in the sky?
- How do telescopes help us understand the universe?
- What other things could be used to look at the moon and stars? How effective would they be?
Monday
A Rube Goldberg Alarm Clock
Finally, that age old question "How do you wake up a pig in the morning?" has been answered. Thanks to Theatre 34 Experimental Entertainment, we now how the technology to remind barnyard animals when to get up in the morning.
No thank you, Mr. Rooster. We won't be needing you anymore. Thanks to our handy-dandy Rube Goldberg Alarm Clock, rising and shining has never been easier.
Sunday
- Explain what happens when light travels from one transparent material to another.
- Why do you think light slows down when it travels through a translucent material?
- In the lifeguard analogy, what is meant by the "fastest path" to the swimmer?
Friday
Infrared Light
Watch this Video and answer the following questions in your own comment.
- What is the difference between visible light and infrared light?
- How is an infrared camera a helpful tool to humans?
- What do the various colors on an infrared photograph signify?
- Explain how infrared radiation contributes to Earth's heating and cooling.
